Yoga Cancer Exercise Specialist®
Yoga instructors and yoga therapists seeking to share the mind-body healing benefits of oncology yoga with cancer patients, during and after cancer surgery and treatment and into survivorship, can now become certified as a Yoga Cancer Exercise Specialist® to help cancer patients and survivors manage treatment side-effects and cancer recovery through an integrated yoga practice.
Yoga, the mind–body medicine of complimentary and alternative medicine, is comprised of a wide range of techniques, which gradually harmonizes the body and mind as compiled by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. Yoga has been an integral part of Ayurveda (the oldest and indigenous medical system practiced in India) because of its health-related benefits. Yoga has been used by Hindus and Buddhists for thousands of years for spirituality and maintaining good health.
While many yoga classes, especially those taught in health clubs, are too vigorous for patients undergoing cancer treatments, gentle sessions tailored to patients with cancer can be modified to meet their individual needs and physical restrictions.
Therapeutic yoga is described as a technique that integrates the practice and philosophy of yoga in order to improve health and well-being, enabling patients to play an active role in their treatment. Important features of yoga as therapeutic tool are its adaptability; it is simple and easy to practice, it can be practiced any time, anyplace, and by anyone. It is cost-effective and can be practiced individually or in a group, in a studio or at the patients’ home. In addition to managing the physical side-effects of treatment, yoga also enriches the spiritual needs of patients that are not met by conventional therapy (surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy). Several studies have shown that yoga for cancer reduces stress, depression, and anxiety, changes cellular environment by genomic alteration, and enhances cellular immunity.
