Associations, Organizations, and Foundations:
When HERS student Ashley Rundel came to him with the idea for the Winona Survivors Unite in Exercise Program, Professor Gary Kastello supported it on an intellectual level, but since his own cancer diagnosis the project has become much more personal. In our interview, he metaphorically referred to the WSUE as his “baby” and, like a real child, the program has kept growing over the last four years from 5 students and survivors in 2011 to 20 students and survivors in 2014. Gary has been there every step of the way, and it was clear to me that he couldn’t be prouder of his students and the participating cancer survivors if they were his own flesh and blood.
Walking Miracles was founded in 2010 by our Founder Brett Wilson, who is a 2 time childhood cancer survivor. Walking Miracles is based in West Virginia where our founder is from. Our founder is from Charleston WV and was also treated in WV during the 1970’s for ALL and 1980’s with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Our founder realized after having long term effects from his own treatments as a child that he was not informed along the way and had long term effects from his treatments he was not aware of and was not educated on during the time of his treatments. Our founder began having major health challenges in 2006 with gallbladder removal and had heart issues as well starting in 2008 with his first pacemaker and continued until 2015 with an aortic valve replacement and having the first pacemaker replaced.
Walking Miracles provide support services in the areas of travel assistance, psychosocial oncology and in survivor education and survivorship clinic information and patient navigation. Our goal is to use our founder’s personal experience and connect patients with referral networks and resources and to access the information for the patients and gather the information for them from these resources and networks and connect them to them.

Invented by David Weck, the BOSU® Balance Trainer debuted in 2000 and quickly became one of the most successful fitness training products in the world. Originally, the name “BOSU” was an acronym for “Both Sides Up.” It meant that the BOSU® Balance Trainer could be used on either side, the dome or the platform. Today, the term “BOSU” has evolved beyond the product to now mean “Both Sides Utilized,” a mindful approach to exercise that is a step beyond traditional training. This clarity of who we are and what we want to offer inspired the development of additional BOSU® products and programming, all of which are grounded in exercise science and proven in real-life application. BOSU® Training is about expanding movement capabilities, reshaping bodies and strengthening minds. It’s about inserting thought into movement. It’s about asking our clients, fitness students and athletes to be physically involved, but to also be present and fully engaged in the training process.

The FAI was founded in 2013 by leading functional aging experts Dan Ritchie, PhD and Cody Sipe, PhD. For over 15 years, Dan and Cody have been at the forefront of developing innovative, effective and science-based training programs for their older clients. Over the past 8 years they have shared their unique philosophies, techniques and insights with tens of thousands of trainers around the world. During that time they reviewed almost every “senior fitness” certification program on the market and could not find any that met their high standards. They decided then and there to create high quality certifications that would help fitness professionals to be more successful with the fastest-growing client base in the world…adults 55 and over. A team of highly-acclaimed experts is being assembled to develop content and help reach FAI’s goal of 10,000 certified fitness professionals in 5 years.
